American League All-Stars : For First Time in Years, Reggie, Carew Not Chosen; Moore Only Angel Picked

Rod Carew and Reggie Jackson still seem assured of future enshrinement in the Hall of Fame, but the lock they have long had on American League All-Star berths is a thing of the past.

Neither was elected to the starting team in the fan vote, and neither was selected as a reserve by Detroit’s Sparky Anderson, who will manage the AL team in Tuesday night’s game at Minneapolis.

A late surge enabled Baltimore first baseman Eddie Murray to finish 50,000 votes ahead of Carew, ending Carew’s string of election victories at 18.

A similar surge by New York center fielder Rickey Henderson left him second in the outfield voting, unseating Jackson, who had been elected for 14 straight years.

Dave Winfield of the Yankees won the outfield vote, with Boston’s Jim Rice third, approximately 19,000 votes ahead of Jackson.

The reserves won’t be named until today, but it was learned that Anderson has selected New York’s Don Mattingly and Milwaukee’s Cecil Cooper as the understudies to Murray, and Seattle’s Phil Bradley, Minnesota’s Tom Brunansky, Chicago’s Harold Baines and the Texas Rangers’ Gary Ward as the outfield reserves.

The elimination of Carew and Jackson leaves relief ace Donnie Moore as the Angels’ only All-Star representative.

In addition to Moore, Anderson selected three pitchers from his Detroit staff--Jack Morris (the expected starter in Tuesday’s game), Dan Petry and reliever Willie Hernandez. He also chose Dave Stieb and Jimmy Key of Toronto, Bert Blyleven of Cleveland and Jay Howell, the Oakland relief star.

Ron Guidry, who is 11-3 and has won 10 straight decisions, is thought to have been the left-handed starting choice ahead of Key but declined the selection because he is starting for the Yankees against Texas Sunday and would be of no use to the All-Star team.

Said Moore, of his first selection: “I feel good about it, but if it wasn’t for the way my teammates played defense and scored runs behind me, I wouldn’t have made it. I wish I could take them with me.”

The 31-year-old Moore has 15 saves and a 7-3 record, having turned his career around in the last two years. He couldn’t recall the last time he made a professional All-Star team. Or if he ever had.

“I never thought something like this could happen,” he said, “but individual things aren’t that important to me. I’d rather get in the playoffs or World Series. Just being in first place is more important to me.”

Carew, batting .275 and 16 hits shy of 3,000, said he would spend the three-day break with his family in Catalina, piloting his boat there.

“He deserves it,” Carew said of Murray. “I’m not at all disappointed. I’ve always wanted three days off.”

Jackson, who has 15 home runs, 43 RBIs and a .268 batting average, was a victim, in some ways, of the fact that Anderson needed a representative from Texas and seemed to have no other choice but Ward, batting .288 with 5 homers and 40 RBIs.

Jackson expressed disappointment, but only in the context that he won’t have many more All-Star opportunities.

“I’m disappointed,” he said, “but there were other guys more deserving, particularly Rickey Henderson. I’m not angry. I’m not hurt. I’m disappointed only because I’m doing decently, I’ve been elected 14 straight times, and how many more chances will I have?

“I mean, I like the idea of having the time off, but guys who say they don’t want to be in the All-Star game are lying. I’ve always considered it an honor, a privilege. I wish I could have made it, but to finish fourth in the voting is a nice little pat on the back.”

Jackson said he would probably spend the break at his Carmel home, keeping company with a six-pack and a bag of popcorn, “checking out the action on the tube like all the other fans.”
