National League All-Stars : Valenzuela Is Named for the Fifth Time

Fernando Valenzuela of the Dodgers was named to the National League All-Star team for the fifth time Thursday as the pitching staff was selected for Tuesday night’s game at Minneapolis.

Joining Valenzuela as starters were Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets, Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros, Joaquin Andujar of the St. Louis Cardinals and LaMarr Hoyt of the San Diego Padres. Chosen as relievers were Goose Gossage of the Padres, Scott Garrelts of the San Francisco Giants and Jeff Reardon of the Montreal Expos.

Gooden, 20, became the youngest player ever to appear in an All-Star game last year, when he combined with Valenzuela to tie a record by striking out six consecutive batters. Gooden, last year’s Rookie of the Year and strikeout champion, is leading the league in earned-run average (1.78) and strikeouts (142) while compiling a 12-3 record.

Ryan, 38, will be making his sixth appearance in the game and second for the NL.

Gossage, 34, will be pitching in his ninth game. Six of his All-Star appearances were for the AL.

Valenzuela (9-8) is leading the league in shutouts and complete games.

Andujar was selected to the team for the fourth time. The right-hander has a 2.38 ERA and a 15-3 record to lead the league in victories.

Hoyt, Reardon and Garrelts will be making their first appearances.

Hoyt is 11-4, including nine victories in a row, with a 3.54 ERA in his first season in the National League.

The pitchers were chosen by the National League office after consulting with NL Manager Dick Williams of San Diego.
