Crushed 2 Iranian Attacks, Iraq Says
The Iraqi government said Saturday that its forces crushed two Iranian ground attacks in the central and southern sectors of the Persian Gulf War front.
The official Iraqi news agency said Iraq foiled an Iranian infantry attack early Friday in the southern sector, killing 40 Iranian soldiers and destroying 12 army vehicles and seven ammunition dumps. It said another Iranian attack, this one in the central front, was also repulsed, with two Iranian infantry companies wiped out.
Meanwhile, shipping sources in Bahrain reported that a blaze aboard the Turkish tanker M. Ceyhan, hit in an Iraqi air attack in the Persian Gulf on Friday, has been brought under control, and the Iranian oil aboard reportedly no longer presents a pollution threat.
