The nation’s savings & loan associations and savings banks held $614 billion of the $1.1 trillion in residential mortgage loans outstanding at all private lenders at the end of 1984, according to the 1985 Savings Institutions Sourcebook.
That was a market share of 56.2%, according to the U. S. League of Savings Institutions, publisher of the Sourcebook. A year earlier, savings institutions held $548 billion in residential mortgage loans, representing about a 55% share of the private market, which excludes holdings of federal agencies, the federal government and mortgage pools.
League figures also showed that total residential mortgage credit outstanding, including loans on homes and apartment buildings, rose nearly $145 billion from the previous year to reach a record $1.5 trillion in 1984.
