Charles Manson, mass-murderer and former cult leader, tried to smuggle a hacksaw blade into San Quentin Prison, a Department of Corrections spokesman said. The blade, hidden in the sole of his shoe, was found during a routine search of the 50-year-old convict, who was transferred to San Quentin last week after nine years at California Medical Facility in Vacaville. Manson masterminded the murders of actress Sharon Tate and eight others in 1969. Prison Lt. Fred Everly said Manson was placed in the maximum-security adjustment center of San Quentin after discovery of the blade. A hacksaw blade and other materials for use in a possible escape attempt were found in his Vacaville cell in 1982.
