South County : Lawmaker Plans Hearing on Health-Care Facilities

Share

Prompted by complaints from residents, Assemblyman Gil Ferguson (R-Newport Beach) will hold a fact-finding hearing Aug. 1 to gather public opinion on the extent and effects of small health-care facilities located in residential neighborhoods.

“Several people in the Mission Viejo area have complained there is too high a concentration in residential neighborhoods,” said Beverly Evans, Ferguson’s administrative assistant. “We’re trying to find out where all these facilities are, what they are doing and if there is too high a concentration of them.”

Information gathered at the hearing may be used to draft possible legislation to regulate the operation of small health-care facilities, convalescent homes and rest homes, many of which are operated in private residences and are not licensed, Evans said.

The hearing, to be held at the Holiday Inn, 25205 La Paz in Laguna Hills, will also include testimony by several state and local agencies, including the departments of Social Services and Health Services and the Orange County Environmental Management Agency.

Civic groups, including the San Clemente Seniors, as well as local residents will also be present.

The hearing begins at 8:30 a.m.
