A Hamburg baker got an early morning customer Tuesday that was too big to fit through the door and didn’t have any money--a hungry three-ton elephant that had broken its chain at a nearby traveling circus.

Police said the elephant banged its trunk at the bakery’s back door at 5 a. m. Overcoming his surprise, the baker then fed the elephant freshly-baked rolls, shut the animal in his backyard and called police.

Three carloads of police rushed to the bakery. Some guarded the animal while others located its owner, who led the elephant back to the circus.
