Local News in Brief : City Council Members Double Own Salary in Thousand Oaks
The Thousand Oaks City Council late Tuesday night unanimously approved a 100% increase in council members’ monthly salaries, its first pay raise in three years.
Beginning in September, each of the five council members will receive $600 a month, twice the current salary of $300 a month. No public opposition to the pay increase was voiced at the meeting.
Council members unanimously agreed to raise their salaries last week in a vote that was taken around 2:30 a.m. The council also agreed then to hold a public hearing on the matter Tuesday.
That hearing did not take place until 11:15 p.m. When no one from the audience commented on the proposal, the council, without discussion, approved the increase.
City Manager Grant Brimhall said the increasing population of the city--now about 93,800--the complexity of local issues and heavy council meeting schedules warranted the pay raise.
