Chris Brown singled home the tying two runs and then scored on a double by Bob Brenly as the San Francisco Giants rallied in the eighth inning Thursday to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-3.

The Pirates had taken a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth with an unearned run off winner Greg Minton, 2-1, but the Giants bounced back against reliever Cecilio Guante, 2-2, who had not allowed a run in 14 innings.

Manny Trillo and Chili Davis opened the inning with singles and advanced on a wild pitch. Brown’s one-out single drove in both runners and Brenly, who entered the game in the top of the eighth, doubled to left-center with two outs to score Brown.

The Pirates jumped on Atlee Hammaker in the first inning. Johnny Ray singled with one out and Bill Madlock hit the next pitch over the screen in left for his sixth homer of the year.

Trillo singled with two outs in the third off Rick Rhoden and scored on a double by Davis.

Pittsburgh made it 3-1 in the eighth when pinch-hitter Lee Mazzilli walked, stole second and went to third on Brenly’s passed ball. Ray’s sacrifice fly drove in Mazzilli.
