Tony Dorsett, the Dallas Cowboys’ financially troubled running back, was given a 48-hour extension to report to training camp Thursday night so that he could fly to Dallas and try to work out some of his tax-lien problems with the Internal Revenue Service.

A “third party” representing Dorsett called at the 7:30 p.m. PDT reporting deadline to ask Coach Tom Landry for the delay.

“Coach Landry granted the extension,” Cowboy President Tex Schramm said. “We are disappointed he is not here but we are more disappointed about the position Tony has arrived at. It’s sad that a player of his ability and personality finds himself in this role.”
