10th Anniversary Set in Papua

Papua New Guinea will celebrate 10 years of independence in September with weeklong festivities. Street parades, fireworks, sports carnivals, cultural events and memorial ceremonies will take place Sept. 12-16 in Port Moresby and various provinces. The independence anniversary is Sept. 16.

Among star attractions will be a 100-meter traditional dragon from China and the performance of an 1,800-year-old dance by a Japanese cultural group. As many as 100 decorated floats will parade in Port Moresby, and choirs and bands will perform.

Nations taking part will include Mexico, Japan and the United States. About 20 heads of state will attend the official commemorative ceremony Sept. 16.
