Four Escape Burning Sloop
Four men escaped unharmed when a 41-foot sloop caught fire about three miles off the west end of Santa Catalina Island as they were returning from a pleasure cruise.
Los Angeles County lifeguard John Stonier said a broken fuel line apparently caused the engine room blaze aboard the Valkyrie. Owner William Bonney, 35, of Los Angeles and three passengers took to an inflatable boat after radioing for help. They were rescued by a county lifeguard boat and a Harbor Patrol boat.
