Panel to Investigate Electrical Blasts at Washington Hilton
Fire officials created a special task force Monday to seek the cause of two electrical explosions that shook the Washington Hilton during the weekend, causing $500,000 damage to the hotel and driving 3,800 guests from their rooms.
The panel, announced by Fire Chief Theodore Coleman, will concentrate on the electrical transformer malfunctions that triggered the two blasts and “look into the problems associated with this kind of an incident,” a fire department spokesman said.
Twelve workers were injured Sunday when electrical switching equipment blew up in a basement transformer room where electricians were repairing damage from a similar blast the day before. No one was hurt in Saturday’s explosion.
