Avalon beaches reopened after raw sewage spills Thursday and Friday caused their closure over the weekend. A 1,200-gallon spill Thursday and an 8,000-gallon spill Friday occurred after an old valve failed in a line carrying sewage to a pumping station, forcing the sewage into Avalon Bay. City Manager John Longley said the valve has been repaired. “We have scientifically verified that the water is safe,” Longley said.
