O’Toole of Huntington Beach Scores 11 Goals to Lead Team in Water Polo

Maureen O’Toole of Huntington Beach scored 11 goals Monday to lead the South team to a win and a tie in the opening day of competition in women’s water polo at the National Sports Festival in Baton Rouge.

O’Toole, a member of the U.S. National team, scored seven goals in the South’s 12-9 win over the North in the first game of the round-robin tournament being held at the Louisiana State University natatorium. She had four of the South’s first five goals, tying the score at 5-5 with 2:22 left in the second period. Shari Baird of Isla Vista put the South ahead for good with a goal 44 seconds later.

O’Toole, a graduate of the University of Hawaii who attended Long Beach Wilson High School and Long Beach City College, scored four goals in the South’s 6-6 tie with the East. The South got a goal with nine seconds remaining in the match to tie the score.
