The United States and France have agreed to increase cooperation on improving security for their nuclear weapons, the State Department said Friday.

Department spokesman Charles Redman told reporters President Reagan sent the agreement to Congress for its approval Thursday.

It takes the form of an amendment to a 1961 U.S.-French nuclear defense accord similar to other bilateral agreements made with many North Atlatnic Treaty Organization countries. France is not part of the military aspect of the alliance.

Redman gave no details of the new agreement, but said that under it “certain classified exchanges focused on enhancing the safety and security of nuclear weapons” would be allowed which were not permitted in the original accord.
