LEFTOVER LIVE AID
Once again, I have watched the superstars of rock, jazz, soul, pop, folk, and country give selflessly of themselves to provide famine relief for the millions in Africa and elsewhere who are dying.
What I haven’t seen are flutes, violins, bassoons and timpani. I haven’t seen Bernstein, Ozawa and Hogwood. I haven’t seen Sills, Pavarotti and Price. I haven’t seen Marsalis, Perlman, Holliger or Ax. The L.A. Master Chorale, Sequoia Quartet and Canadian Brass are silent. National Public Radio and PBS continue to ask for contributions--to support their programming, not to feed the starving.
Has anyone of those I admire in the field of classical music taken as much as five minutes to consider if there were anything they could do--any comparable collective effort to contribute a few hours time for such a desperate need?
Is anyone out there listening?!
