Olympic Incident Leads to $12-Million Suit
Two members of Jews for Jesus have filed a $12.5-million lawsuit against the University of California Board of Regents and the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee, contending that they were illegally barred from distributing leaflets and then arrested at UCLA during the 1984 Olympics.
Steven Silverstein and Alan Howard Snyder filed the Superior Court suit, which said that Jews for Jesus, an organization of Jews who have converted to born-again Christians, has strict policies not to solicit or accept money when distributing literature and that members do not harass or touch anyone they talk to.
LAOOC attorney Carol Daniels said she could not comment on the suit, which was filed Friday, because she had not yet seen it. A spokesman for the regents could not be reached for comment.
