Teacher Held for Trial on Abuse
Former Los Angeles schoolteacher Terry E. Bartholome, accused of sexually abusing 17 girls in his third-grade class, must stand trial on 27 charges of rape, child molesting and lewd conduct, a Los Angeles Municipal Court judge ruled today.
Citing lack of evidence, Judge Xenophon F. Lang dismissed one misdemeanor lewd conduct count. Deputy Dist. Atty. Rita A. Stapleton said she will file an unspecified number of additional charges against Bartholome, 48, before his arraignment in Los Angeles Superior Court on Aug. 20. Those charges will involve new crimes described by child witnesses during Bartholome’s preliminary hearing, Stapleton said. (Related stories, Page 3.)
