Following six reported cases of flea-borne (murine) typhus this summer, Los Angeles County health officials are urging residents to trim heavy vegetation which might harbor flea-infested rats and opossums. They also warn that household pets should be bathed and given anti-flea collars or sprays. The flea-borne typhus is not contagious and can be treated with antibiotics; its symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches and a rash.
