A La Jolla couple was arrested and charged with enslaving and abusing four immigrant women. FBI agents arrested Kenneth Kimes, 66, and his wife, Santee, 41, on a criminal complaint filed by Adela Sanchez Guzman, who said the Kimeses beat her repeatedly when she worked for them in Las Vegas and Honolulu, refused to pay her, kept her locked in their recreational vehicle, and did not allow her to write or telephone anyone. The warrant alleged that the Kimeses held at least three other Central American women against their will in similar circumstances. One of the women said she had also been burned with an iron and threatened with return to her native El Salvador, where she would be subject to imprisonment. A federal magistrate in San Diego ordered the Kimeses, who were described by the FBI as Anaheim motel owners, taken to Las Vegas for a detention hearing.
