Soviet sports officials and the Atlanta-based Turner Broadcasting System announced plans for televising the 1986 Goodwill Games, a summer event for U.S. and Soviet athletes hailed by the organizers as a means of taking the politics out of superpower sports.

An agreement establishing the commercial venture between TBS and the Soviet government agencies for broadcasting and sports was signed during a news conference linking New York, Moscow and London by satellite.

Costs for the superpower competition, to which selected athletes from other countries also will be invited, will be borne by TBS and the Soviet agencies, which also will share in any profits from advertising and promotion, according to Robert Wussler, TBS executive vice president.

The cost of sponsoring the games and expected revenues from the estimated 75 hours of television coverage TBS plans have not been determined yet, Wussler said.

The first Goodwill Games are planned for next July 5-20 in Moscow. If the venture is successful, the competition will be repeated every four years, with the second to be staged in the United States in 1990.
