A Long Beach attorney faces arraignment Aug. 15 on charges that he bilked an elderly couple of more than $124,000 while handling the sale of their two apartment buildings in the city.

Timothy D. Brown, 39, was arrested and booked Aug. 1 on suspicion of grand theft. He was later released on $5,000 bail.

Al Albergate, a district attorney spokesman, said Brown is suspected of stealing money he owed to Gerald and Dora Ruggles, former area residents now living in Beeville, Tex.

The couple said they had hired Brown in 1982 to represent them in the sale of their two buildings. After the buildings were sold a year ago, Brown allegedly failed to send the money to the couple, Albergate said.

Brown is suspected of using the money to write checks to himself and others “for personal use,” Albergate said. Brown could not be reached for comment.
