A subway rider fired two bullets into the chest of a fellow passenger today in a rush-hour argument over a seat, and five people were trampled in the ensuing panic on the crowded car, police said.

The shooting victim, about 17, was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Injuries to the five other passengers were believed to be minor, but three of the victims--a child and two adults--were taken to Metropolitan Hospital for treatment, said Louis Cafiero, a spokesman for Emergency Medical Services.

The shooting occurred at 7:47 a.m. at a stop on a southbound train on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, transit police said. After the shooting, the gunman fled into the station.

Service on the line was interrupted for about 20 minutes while police searched in vain for the gunman.
