Presidential spokesman Larry Speakes defended his credibility and said White House doctors had given him incorrect information about the procedure used last week to remove a skin cancer from the President’s nose. Speakes issued a written statement correcting his earlier assertions that Reagan had not received an anesthetic when a dermatologist removed the patch of cancer from his nose. In fact, Reagan received a local anesthetic, the statement said. Faced with criticism of his handling of information, Speakes told the press: “I’m here to stay.”
