Defeated GOP Aspirant Put on State Board
A Southern California real estate broker, Richard E. Longshore, who fell only a few votes short in a high-stakes central Orange County Assembly race last year, has been named by Gov. George Deukmejian to the California Veterans Board.
The board sets policy for the Department of Veterans Affairs, which administers low-interest farm and home loan programs for military veterans. Longshore is a retired Navy officer and American Legion post commander.
The 59-year-old Anaheim resident lost to Assemblyman Richard Robinson (D-Garden Grove) by 256 votes in one of California’s most expensive Assembly campaigns of the year. The two spent a total of $1.1 million in the race.
Deukmejian also announced the appointment of Leo Burke, 58, a Stockton Community College trustee, to the seven-member board. Both appointees are Republicans.
Deukmejian created the two board vacancies in May, when he removed two appointees of former Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. after their terms expired in January.
