Top-seeded John McEnroe, who drew the ire of some fans when he stopped play in a net dispute, routed Bud Schultz of Boston, 6-2, 6-1, Wednesday in second round play at the $315,000 Volvo International tournament at Stratton, Vt.

No. 2 Ivan Lendl eliminated Dan Goldie of McLean, Va., 6-4, 6-3, and No. 3 Jimmy Connors had little trouble with Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia, winning 6-3, 6-1, in second-round action.

McEnroe, ranked No. 1 in the world, demanded a net judge in the second game of the match while Schultz, ranked 70th in the world, was serving.

While the judge was brought to the stadium, McEnroe balked at continuing to play, which resulted in catcalls from the stands. When McEnroe asked the umpire why he should play instead of waiting, someone called out, “Because I paid 15 bucks to see you play” and someone else added, “And I paid four bucks to park.”

Play resumed, and Schultz double-faulted three straight times to lose service. McEnroe, who finished the match in 57 minutes, later denied he was trying to unnerve the rookie.

“I felt bad (about the double faults). Obviously the crowd and he thought that was the reason I did it, but it wasn’t,” he said.

McEnroe, who claimed that a chair umpire “is too far away to hear a let,” said no player should use an interruption of play as an excuse for losing.

“He could easily have thrown in two more aces instead of double-faulting,” he said. “Maybe he was flustered, but if that’s all it takes to get him out of rhythm, geez . . .

“I have to deal with a thousand times more distractions both on and off the court. That’s just part of being a professional athlete.”

Top-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd and third-seeded Hana Mandlikova posted easy second-round victories in the $280,000 Canadian Open at Toronto.

Evert Lloyd disposed of fellow American Tina Mochizuki, 6-2, 6-0, while Mandlikova, of Czechoslovakia, defeated South African Rosalyn Fairbank, 6-3, 6-3.

Evert Lloyd, who lost to Martina Navratilova in the final at Wimbledon, earned the No. 1 seed because of her victory at a tournament in Newport, R.I., two weeks ago. The Canadian Open is Navratilova’s first outing since Wimbledon. She plays her second match today.

In night matches, American Molly Van Nostrand, ranked 69th in the world, staged the biggest upset of her young professional career, disposing of sixth-seeded Wendy Turnbull of Australia, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, and Canada’s Carling Bassett, eighth seeded, defeated Terry Phelps of Larchmont, N.Y., 6-0, 2-6, 6-3.

Spain’s Emilio Sanchez upset second-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round of the $150,000 Austrian Open at Kitzbuehel.

The 20-year old Spaniard kept his opponent off guard on the slow center court and capitalized on Nystrom’s many errors.
