Award-winning new movies and videos from the 1985 American Film Festival in New York will be screened in a free weeklong film series beginning Sunday at the Fullerton Public Library.

Independently made 1984 films to be shown Sunday through Thursday and next Saturday range from “When the Mountains Tremble,” which examines the struggle of Indian peasants in Guatemala as a result of the strife in Central America, to “New Spirit of Painting: Six Painters of the 1980s,” a documentary about six neo-Expressionist painters from the contemporary art world.

Other entries include “My Father’s Son,” about the ordeal of an alcoholic’s son; “Breaking the Silence: The Generation After the Holocaust,” which looks at the lives of children of World War II Holocaust survivors, and “Visual Effects: Wizardry on Film,” which uses excerpts from Mel Brooks’ “History of the World, Part I” to illustrate artistic special effects in contemporary movies.

“These are the films that win best short subject or best documentary Academy Awards and then are never heard from again,” said series coordinator Judy Rohr. “They are the type of films that libraries buy, but it’s a shame that nobody knows they are available. This (film series) is a way to call attention to the good films in our library and to provide an additional source of information and entertainment to the community.”

All films in the series were entries in the 1985 American Film Festival, held May 27 to June 1. The festival, sponsored by the Educational Film Library Assn., is designed “to showcase outstanding 16mm and video releases of the preceding year,” Rohr said.

Several films will be shown each day and most are 30 to 40 minutes. Screenings will be Sunday from 1:30 to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and next Saturday from 12:30 to 5 p.m. The library is at 353 W. Commonwealth Ave.
