Santa Ana : Husband Arrested in Shooting of Policeman

Share

A Santa Ana man was arrested late Thursday for attempted murder after wounding an off-duty police officer who had been visiting the man’s wife, police said.

Alex Cain, 23, is being held on $250,000 bail in the shooting of San Clemente Officer Ronald J. Garcia, who was wounded in the right leg and buttocks with birdshot as he ran from Cain’s Santa Ana home.

Garcia, 27, underwent surgery at UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was reported in fair condition. San Clemente Police Lt. Al Ehlow said the incident was under investigation but that Garcia has not been suspended.

San Clemente City Manager Jim Hendrickson said possible disciplinary action against Garcia, a department employee for three years, would hinge upon the result of the investigation. Hendrickson said he did not know when a report would be issued.

“If there had been a shooting in San Clemente, there would be an immediate suspension,” Hendrickson said. But because it occurred outside the city, the incident “falls under a different set of rules.”
