Camp Counselor Admits Molestations
A former counselor at a Saugus summer camp pleaded guilty in San Fernando Municipal Court Friday to two counts of child molestation for assaulting two boys in his care.
Philip Lee Rodgers, 27, of Los Angeles admitted to Judge Paul I. Metzler that he molested the boys, one 10 years old and the other 13, while they were at Woodcraft Rangers Camp during July and August of 1984.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Kent Cahill agreed to ask the judge to drop three other charges in return for Rodgers’ guilty pleas to a felony count and a misdemeanor count of child molestation.
Rodgers could receive up to eight years in prison when he appears for sentencing Sept. 26, Cahill said.
Cahill said he accepted the plea bargain in order to avoid forcing the victims to testify. One of the boys was in foster care at the time of the molestation and the other lives in another state, he said.
Rodgers, who is free on $1,500 bail, has no previous criminal record and is undergoing counseling, Cahill said.
