SMU Says It Will Challenge NCAA Penalties in Court
Southern Methodist University officials said Friday that they will appeal NCAA penalties that, according to a published report, will deny the Mustangs football scholarships next year and impose a two-year moratorium on bowl and television appearances.
The Dallas Times Herald said the penalties were assessed by the NCAA’s committee on infractions. The newspaper also said school officials plan to challenge the decision in court next week, charging discrimination.
The NCAA conducted a 26-month investigation into the school’s athletic program that focused on the role of Mustang boosters and allegations that recruits were offered cash, cars and jobs for their relatives if they would attend SMU.
