The cost of corporate relocation of both renters and new hires decreased 3% during 1984, according to the Washington-based Employee Relocation Council, which said it was the first cost decline since the council began gathering data in 1976.

The average cost to relocate a renter decreased from $8,917 in 1983 to $8,663 in 1984, while the average relocation cost of new hires, both homeowners and renters, dropped from 1983’s $13,379 to $12,958. The council credited a brighter economic outlook and lower inflation.
