A program using peanut butter-flavored pesticides to get rid of pigeons has been scrapped by Santa Clara County. “We’re not going to put out any more poison,” said Jane Decker, a county spokeswoman. “If somebody can show us a more humane, cost-effective way of dealing with the problem, we’re ready to listen.” The pigeon-poisoning program in San Jose was launched at the courthouse months ago after several employees complained about the filth in the roosting areas. But visitors to the courthouse grounds said they would see pigeons eat the poison, then stagger around before finally dying. County supervisors are holding a hearing next week to consider alternatives.
