Egypt announced Sunday that it foiled a Libyan plot to kill an opponent of the Libyan government, arresting four would-be assassins moments before they were to ambush the political refugee.

Egyptian security forces arrested four Egyptians in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria last Tuesday as they prepared to kill Libyan political refugee Geith Mabrouk, according to a statement by state security police.

Two of the four, Egyptian-born cousins who lived in Libya, were hired by two Libyan intelligence agents several months ago to kill Mabrouk in return for $15,000 each and two Toyota automobiles, the statement said .

The other two Libyan agents have since been sentenced to death in another case.

Egyptian security forces received a tip about the plot and arrested the four as they waited to ambush Mabrouk in front of a hotel he owns in Alexandria.
