Bob Walk, the winningest pitcher in Triple-A for the Hawaii Islanders, cleared waivers Sunday and was promoted by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The former Hart High and College of the Canyons right-hander joined the Pirates on Monday in St. Louis. He is expected to start Thursday night’s game against the Cardinals’ Danny Cox (13-7).
Walk, who was released by the Atlanta Braves following the 1983 season and has not pitched in a major league game in more than a year, was 16-5 in Hawaii with a 2.65 earned-run average.
At the time of his promotion, he led the Pacific Coast League in wins, ERA, innings pitched (173) and complete games (12).
The Pirates made room for him on their roster by outrighting Dave Tomlin to Hawaii. Tomlin had been promoted a week earlier when the Pirates traded pitchers John Candelaria and Al Holland to the Angels and got only one pitcher, Pat Clements, in return.
