After a three-hour debate last week, the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission delayed a decision regarding a proposal by the Church of Spiritual Technology to occupy the 198-acre former La Vina Hospital property in Altadena. Despite a recommendation by county staff that the permit request be denied, Chairman Stanley Gould said that the commission will seek more information before making a decision.

The church, which is an affiliate of the Church of Scientology, is seeking to establish a training center for ministers and archives for safeguarding the words of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. “This is too serious a project not to be sure we see all angles on it,” Gould said. He said that the commission will visit the proposed site Sept. 19, before reopening the hearing Sept. 23.
