A Rancho Santa Fe man was killed early Thursday when he lost control of his car and drove off the Sunset Cliffs Boulevard bridge into the San Diego River flood control channel, the San Diego County coroner’s office said.

A spokesman said George Henry Lerg III, 24, was driving southbound on the bridge about 1 a.m. when his car struck a guardrail and rolled off the bridge. A friend who was driving in front of Lerg, Clayton Taylor of San Diego, noticed Lerg’s car was missing and doubled back. He then pulled Lerg out of the sinking car, the spokesman said.

Mission Bay Harbor Patrol lifeguards and San Diego police towed the car from the water. Lerg was pronounced dead at the scene by a Life Flight doctor.
