A Navy petty officer on the San Diego-based submarine tender McKee died after inhaling freon gas while working in an air conditioning and refrigeration area of the ship, Navy officials said Thursday.
A spokesman said Petty Officer Second Class Norman T. Holstein, 23, of Chula Vista, was overcome by freon gas Tuesday evening. After the ship’s doctor and paramedics failed to revive him, Holstein was taken to Sharp Cabrillo Hospital in Point Loma, where he was pronounced dead about 8 p.m.
Navy officials are investigating the circumstances of Holstein’s death.
