The banned pesticide DDT has been found in Newport Bay in the highest levels ever recorded on the California coast, state officials said. The toxic chemical, banned in the United States in 1977 and suspected of causing cancer, was found in mussels that had been placed in Newport Bay, Anaheim Bay and Huntington Harbor two years ago as part of a statewide monitoring program. The monitoring program also showed elevated levels of mercury, PCBs and other toxic chemicals in Orange County coastal waters.
