Irvine : Convention Bureau to Ask for City Money

Share

Board members of the fledgling Visitors and Convention Bureau will again come before the City Council today to seek $270,000 in city money.

Larry Larsen, executive assistant to Irvine City Manager William Woollett, said the council will be asked to provide the bureau with about $50,000 now and the rest in January.

The $270,000 request represents 1% of the estimated $2.7 million the city expected to collect in bed taxes during the 1985-86 fiscal year, Larsen said. Funding for the bureau would also come from the Irvine Chamber of Commerce.

Ron Cribbett, general manager of the Irvine Marriott and the bureau’s board chairman, said that if the plan is approved by the council today, the first task would be to hire an executive director. The search for one, he estimated, would take two to three months.

Council members Larry Agran and Barbara Wiener voted against giving city funds for the bureau when it was given tentative approval by the council in June.
