Claudell Washington of the Atlanta Braves had his marijuana-possession case put on hold to allow time for him to explain to probation officials why he should be placed in a drug diversion program rather than face trial.

Washington, represented by attorney James Giller, was not present at Walnut Creek, Calif., when Municipal Court Judge Joseph Longacre continued the case until Oct. 23.

Washington was arrested Feb. 19 in Walnut Creek and was charged with one misdemeanor count of marijuana possession.
