Services Planned for Lawyer Herman Smith

A funeral service for Herman Smith, a long-established attorney in South-Central Los Angeles and the Republican nominee for the 21st Congressional District seat captured by Democratic Rep. Augustus Hawkins in 1962, will be held today at Bel Vue Presbyterian Church on East 118th Street.

Smith was 69 when he died Sunday of a heart ailment.

Co-author of the college text, “California Politics and Policies,” Smith earned his law degree at Southwestern University in Los Angeles after undergraduate work at Prairie View University in Texas.

He was chairman of the Watts branch of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People from 1965 to 1969.

His survivors include his wife, Celestine; a son, Herman Jr.; a brother and three sisters.
