Pistons Sign Dumars; Wennington Agrees to Terms With Mavericks
National Basketball Assn. first-round draft picks Joe Dumars of the Detroit Pistons and Bill Wennington of the Dallas Mavericks came to terms with their teams Wednesday.
Wennington, a 7-foot center who played at St. John’s, agreed to a four-year contract at an estimated $250,000 for the first two years. The actual signing of Wennington, who was one of Dallas’ three first-round picks, will be delayed until next month owing to Wennington’s wedding later this month. The other two first-round picks by Dallas were Uwe Blab, who played at Indiana, and Detlef Schrempf of Washington. Blab has signed, but Schrempf has not agreed to a contract.
Dumars played at McNeese State and was considered one of the top guards in the draft. He reportedly signed a four-year contract with the Pistons worth $800,000. He will receive $150,000 in his rookie season, $200,000 for each of the next two seasons and $250,000 in his final season.
