Tennis Roundup : Becker Flies Back, Puts on a Show of His Own
Wimbledon champion Boris Becker used a high-powered serve to defeat Brian Teacher, 6-4, 6-4, Wednesday night in the second round of the $375,000 Assn. of Tennis Professionals Championship at Mason, Ohio.
“I was a little bit tired tonight,” said the 17-year-old West German who had flown to Los Angeles between Monday’s and Wednesday’s matches to appear on the “Tonight Show.”
“I got back at 2 a.m. today.”
Still, he blistered Teacher with 11 aces.
Earlier, Mats Wilander of Sweden defeated Pavel Slozil of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 6-3, and wore a “We Love Boris” T-shirt into the interview room as a joke.
Becker T-shirts--not Wilander shirts--are on sale at the tournament even though the Swede is the two-time defending champion.
“I saw Boris on the Johnny Carson Show last night and I thought he was good. So, I bought his T-shirt today,” Wilander said.
Until Becker came along, Wilander, who celebrates his 21st birthday today, was the youngest male to win a Grand Slam singles title with his French Open victory in 1982.
In other second-round matches, Anders Jarryd of Sweden defeated Ricardo Acuna of Chile, 6-4, 6-4, and Yannick Noah of France beat Hans Schwaier of West Germany, 7-5, 6-4.
In a $150,000 Challenge Cup at Jericho, N.Y., Ivan Lendl defeated 18-year-old Bruno Oresar of Yugoslavia, 6-2, 6-1, in 61 minutes.
At Monticello, N.Y., Helen Kelesi of Canada upset fourth-seeded Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals of a $75,000 Virginia Slims tournament.
