Mission Viejo’s Wendy Wyland, defending world platform diving champion, a bronze medalist in the 1984 Olympics and a gold medalist in the 1983 Pan American Games, will be honored as a recipient of The Southland Olympia Award at a noon luncheon on Sept. 5 at the Mission Viejo Country Club.
A cocktail reception will begin at 11:30 a.m. for Wyland, a member of the Mission Viejo Nadadores who trained under Olympic diving Coach Ron O’Brien. She will be presented with a reproduction of a Greek amphora (two-handled vase) that was given to athletes 2,500 years ago in the Panathenaic Festivals of ancient Athens.
Sanctioned by the U.S. Olympic Committee and presented by The Southland Corporation, the award is given to athletes in the 31 summer and winter Olympic sports who excel in athletics, leadership and scholarship.
