A campground in the Angeles National Forest was closed by Los Angeles County health officials after they determined that a dead ground squirrel found there died of plague. Ground spraying of an insecticide to kill fleas is under way at the Table Mountain Campground, which was evacuated and closed, said Bob Swinford of the U.S. Forest Service. Tests determined that the squirrel died of sylvatic plague, which is called bubonic plague when contracted by humans, health officials said. The plague is carried by fleas. The campground is 45 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Mountains.
