Crockett Defeated in Karate Final
Leon Pate of Newark, N.J., outscored defending champion David Crockett of San Juan Capistrano, who was a stunt man in the movie “Karate Kid,” to capture a gold medal in the finals Sunday of the National AAU Karate Championship tournament.
Pate won the sparring match in the 60-65 kilogram category.
All of the gold medalists in the three-day tournament will now represent the United States in international competition as members of the U.S. National Karate Team. The next major international competition will be in Australia in 1986.
In a goodwill team competition between the junior teams from Japan and the United States, the Japanese team swept all events in the matches for competitors age 14-17.
It was the first international competition by the U.S. junior team, said Julie Whitmore, spokeswoman for the tournament. Officials said the Hungarian junior national team, which was scheduled to attend, could not make the trip.
