U.S. District Judge Pamela Ann Rymer ruled in Los Angeles Monday that the government can collect the $100,000 bond posted by Richard Smyth, a Huntington Beach engineer who fled before he was to stand trial Aug. 20. The bond was secured by a deed to Smyth’s waterfront Huntington Harbour home, which is up for sale.
Smyth, 55, was indicted May 16 on charges of illegally exporting devices that could be used as nuclear triggers to Israel. Smyth pleaded innocent to the charges.
He was last seen by his family Aug. 10. His wife, Emilie, is also missing. Rymer issued a warrant for Smyth’s arrest on Aug. 14.
