Dick Wakefield, the former outfielder for the Detroit Tigers who was one of baseball’s first high-priced bonus players, died following a bout with cancer. He was 64.

Wakefield signed for $52,000 in 1940. He played for the Tigers in 1941, 1943 through 1944, and 1946 through 1949.

He started on the American League All-Star team in 1943 while leading the team with a .316 batting average and pacing the league in hits with 200.
