A body found last week in Shasta Lake has been identified as that of an Oregon State University student who disappeared in a Memorial Day weekend boating accident. Shasta County Coroner Margie Boddy said the dead woman was Laurie Chiaretta, 22, of Fullerton. Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Richardson said Chiaretta and Thomas Morrish of Calgary, Canada, fell off a water sled that was being pulled by a boat. When the boat returned to pick them up, it ran over them. Chiaretta drowned while trying to put her life jacket on Morrish, officers said. Morrish’s body was recovered immediately. Gary Jones, 32, and Mark Thomas, 30, both of Orangevale, were allegedly in the boat, but fled the scene. They were arrested later and are free on bail pending trial on manslaughter charges, officers said.
